What this check is for

If you are asking what documents you need for a Swiss rental application, the tool above gives you a quick answer. You tick what you already hold, and it shows what is still missing. It takes about two minutes.

Swiss landlords and property managers often receive many applications for one apartment. A complete file, sent quickly, is easier to consider than a partial one.

How to use the result

The result is an orientation, not a decision. It does not tell you whether a landlord will accept you, and it does not replace a specialist looking at your situation. Landlords set their own criteria, and these differ from one property to another.

Here is a typical way to read it:

  • Items already checked: keep them in one digital folder, ready to send.
  • Items missing: these are the ones to organize first, ideally before you travel.
  • Items you are unsure about: ask the property manager what exactly they accept from someone arriving from abroad.

What a typical file contains

Most files include an application form, a copy of your passport or ID, proof of your job or income, and a debt collection extract (a certificate from the local collection office, called Betreibungsauszug). Many also ask for proof of liability insurance and, for arrivals, your permit or the contract that supports it.

For an example, picture a couple moving from Singapore with a child starting school in the autumn. They can prepare their IDs, employment contract and insurance proof at home, while the local certificates are arranged as soon as they have an address. For more detail, see the rental application file landlords expect.

After you arrive

Once you move in, a registration with your municipality follows. In general, the announcement to the municipality is made within 14 days of arrival, though this can vary by commune or canton. You bring ID, your residence or work permit, and proof of health insurance (ch.ch).

To plan the whole sequence, see your relocation calendar and the lease and rent deposit explained. If you want help with your file, use the request at the bottom of the page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Swiss apartment from abroad?

Yes, many people do. Some landlords ask for a signed job contract first, and others prefer a viewing. Ask the property manager what they accept.

What if I have no debt collection extract yet?

It is usually issued locally, so it can be hard to get before arrival. Ask whether a statement from your home country or a later submission is accepted.

Does a complete file mean I get the apartment?

No. A complete file helps your application, but the landlord decides.

Who can help me with my file?

A relocation company can review it with you. The request at the bottom of the page puts you in touch with one that fits your needs. See also how we help.
